Otvorena Televizija (Open Television) was established in 1989 as the first independent TV station in the former Yugoslavia under the national TV system called JRT (Yugoslav Radio Television). Following the democratic and transitional changes in the Eastern Europe, Croatia gained its independence and OTV became the leading local TV station in the country. OTV used their leading position to organize a network of local TV stations, which have been acting as a unit for a number of years, broadcasting programs of great significance throughout the day. Due to the open nature of the stations content, OTV has always accepted different modes of expression. OTV was the first to broadcast the Christmas midnight mass from the Zagreb cathedral, had the first political talk-show with live phone in program, the first genuine crossfire, and the first elements of interactive TV. Insofar as ‘our name is our program’, there is a saying so often used when OTV is in question: ‘Only firsts are remembered.’ The fact is that Otvorena Televizija was the first private commercial TV in this part of Europe.

The area covered by the OTV signal is the City of Zagreb and Zagreb County (Sv. Ivan Zelina, Vrbovec, Ivanic Grad, Sv. Nedelja, Jastrebarsko, Velika Gorica, Zapresic, Samobor), with 93% coverage of a total of 500,000 households and 1.3 million potential viewers.
